GURU IMPORTANCE

🌕Guru Purnima 2025: The Day to Thank the Ones Who Lit Our Path.

🙏 Importance of Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is a sacred festival dedicated to expressing gratitude and reverence to our Gurus—the teachers, mentors, spiritual guides, and life coaches who help us grow in knowledge, wisdom, and values.

The word "Guru" is derived from Sanskrit:

  • Gu = Darkness (Ignorance)

  • Ru = Remover

Thus, a Guru is one who removes the darkness of ignorance and leads us towards enlightenment.

In Indian culture, the Guru is considered even above God, because it is the Guru who shows us the path to divine understanding and right living.

💫 Why Guru Purnima is Celebrated: The Historical Background

🧙‍♂️ 1. Birth Anniversary of Maharishi Ved Vyasa

  • Guru Purnima is celebrated as Vyasa Purnima to honor Sage Ved Vyasa, one of the greatest teachers in Indian history.

  • He was born on this full moon day of the Hindu month Ashadha.

  • Ved Vyasa compiled the four Vedas, wrote the Mahabharata, and classified the Puranas—laying the foundation for Hindu scriptures.

  • He is considered the Adi Guru (original teacher) of the Vedic tradition.

That’s why teachers and gurus are worshipped on this day, especially in spiritual and Vedic traditions.

🧘 2. Lord Shiva – The First Guru (Adi Yogi)

  • According to yogic tradition, Lord Shiva became the first Guru (Adi Guru) on this very day.

  • He gave the knowledge of yoga to the Saptarishis (seven sages), who then spread it across the world.

  • This makes Guru Purnima a very important day for all spiritual seekers and yogis.

🕉️ 3. Lord Buddha’s First Teaching (Dhamma Day)

  • On this day, Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Sarnath, near Varanasi.

  • It marks the beginning of the Buddhist Sangha (community of monks and disciples).

  • Therefore, Buddhists also celebrate Guru Purnima as a day of spiritual awakening and gratitude.

📚 Why It Still Matters Today

In the modern world, we learn from:

  • School and college teachers

  • Mentors and career guides

  • Spiritual leaders

  • Even books, challenges, and experiences

But what remains common is the role of the Guru in showing us the right path.

“A Guru is not someone who gives you answers, but someone who awakens the answers within you.”

🙌 In Short:

  • 🗓️ Occasion: Full Moon Day in Ashadha month

  • 🎉 Purpose: To honor the Guru – the remover of darkness

  • 👑 Historical Figures: Maharishi Ved Vyasa, Lord Shiva, Gautama Buddha

  • 🎓 Modern Relevance: Thanking teachers, mentors, and life guides who shape our lives
