Heat

Heat
Introduction: In previous topic we have seen that the internal energy of the system. In our daily life we come across many activities like cooking, motorbike engine, etc where heat is the basic parameter of interest. In this topic we are going to discuss about first laws of thermodynamics. This laws gives us a clear relation between heat, internal energy and wok done.

The transfer of heat take place due to difference in temperature of the system and surrounding. Let us understand the concept will some illustrative examples.

Case I : As shown in figure A below, the temperature of the surrounding is greater than system (TE > TS).Thus the heat will flow from surrounding to system and the system will gain heat and the heat will be considered as Positive(+Q) as the system gains the heat.

Case II : As shown in figure B below, the temperature of the surrounding is greater than system (TE < TS).Thus the heat will flow from system to surrounding and the system will loose heat and the heat will be considered as Negative (-Q) as the system loose the heat.

Case III : As shown in figure C below, the temperature of the surrounding is equal to that of system (TE =  TS).Thus the heat will not flow from system to surrounding and vice versa.
