Consider a bar magnet as given in  the figure above, having magnetic strength -m and +m seperated by a distance 2l. Let P be any point on the axis where magnetic induction is to be determined. Let the distance between Centre and point P is r. 
then from fig, l(NP) = r-l and l(SP) = r+l

If  Bar magnet is very short i.e l is very very small, then l can be neglected and equation changes to,
