Moving coil galvanometer

Moving coil galvanometer

Introduction: In order to measure the quantity in the electrical system we make use of devices such as Ammeter, voltmeter as well as Galvanometer. We are going to discuss more about galvanometers in this topic.

Principle: When a current-carrying coil is placed in a magnetic field it experiences a torque.

Diagram :

Construction: It consists of a soft iron core having N number of turns carrying a current I. This iron core is placed in a magnetic field in such a way that it is free to rotate about a fixed orbit axis in a radial uniform magnetic field. The lower end of the coil is attached with a spring as shown in the figure above.

Working: As soon as the current is passed through this coil, the coil experience a torque and starts rotating. this torque is balanced by a restoring torque produced in the spring.
