Electric flux
Introduction : We have seen in previous topic that whenever a charge is placed in a space, it develops an electric field around it. An imaginary field lines exist that plays a major role in linking electric flux through any given area. The Electric flux is a property of electric field which gives us an idea about how much electric field is passing through any given area. Let us understand this concept in detail.

Electric flux (Ñ„) : Electric flux is defined as number of electric field line passing through a given area.
Electric flux through area |
let us understand this in more better way using diagram given below.
Consider an electric field E as shown in figure above. An object having area is placed in an electric field as shown. Thus the some number of electric field lines can be seen passing through the object. The product of this Electric field lines and area vector gives the electric flux through the given object
Mathematically,
ф = E. ds cosθ ---(1)
Ñ„ = Electric flux
E= Electric field lines
ds = Area vector
Case II
If the object is placed at perpendicular to the field .i,e the angle between E and d is 90 then, electric flux is zero.
ф = E. ds cosθ
Ñ„ = E. ds cos (90)
Ñ„ = 0
Case II
If the object is placed at an angle θ to the field .i,e then, electric flux is given by equation,
ф = E. ds cosθ
or
Ñ„ = ∫ dÑ„ = ∫E. ds =E .ds
The SI unit of electric flux is (V/m) . m2
=Vm
Electric flux is a scalar quantity
