Angular Momentum

Introduction: we have studied that any object having mass m moving with a velocity 'v' have linear momentum P = mv . Angular momentum is rotational analogous of linear momentum. Let us study it in detail in this topic.

The moment of linear momentum is called as angular momentum.

mathematically,

 L = r x P  --(A)

Where L =angular momentum

   r = position vector

          P = linear momentum

Figure A

Consider a rigid body rotating about an axis perpendicular to the plane with constant angular velocity ω. Let this body is made up of n numbers of particles of masses m1,m2,m3,mn at respective perpendicular distances r1,r2,r3,rn from axis of rotation. When the body rotates each particle rotates with same angular velocity ω and different linear  velocity  v1,v2,v3,vn.
