 Capillary Action

Introduction : Various action like absorbing of ink by a blotting paper, transportation of water from root of the tree to various parts of the tree, rise of a water in any capillary tube are all related to an interesting action of a liquid called as capillary action. Let us understand the concept in details.

Capillarity : The rise or fall of a liquid inside a capillary tube when it is dipped in a liquid is called as Capillarity or capillary action.

Consider a container containing liquid in it. a capillary tube is immersed in a liquid such that liquid level rises in the capillary. Consider a point A which is just outside the the free surface of liquid in capillary tube. Point B is just below the concave surface. Point D  is on a free surface of liquid at exposed to atmosphere experiencing atmospheric pressure.The  rise of a liquid level in capillary is given by,
