Image formed by a concave mirror

Image formed by a concave mirror

Introduction: The image formed due to a concave mirror basically depends on the position at which the object is kept. As in the case of the plane mirror, the object and image position was the same with respect to a pole of the mirror but in the case of a concave mirror, the position and nature of the image are decided by the position of the object. Let us study this with the help of a suitable example.

Case 1: Objet is kept at infinity

Object Location: At infinity
Image Location: Focus ( for a mirror of small aperture)
Nature of Image: Real
Magnification:  m = 0

Case 2: Objet is kept beyond Centre of Curvature

Object Location: Beyond C
Image Location: Between C and F
Nature of Image: Real
Magnification :  m < 1

Case 3: Objet is kept at Centre of Curvature

Object Location: At C
Image Location: At C
Nature of Image: Real
Magnification :  m = 1

Case 4: Objet is kept between Centre of Curvature and Focus

Object Location: Between C and F
Image Location: Beyond C
Nature of Image: Real
Magnification :  m > 1

Case 5: Objet is kept at Focus

Object Location: At F
Image Location: Infinity
Nature of Image: Real
Magnification:  m = ∞

Case 6: Objet is between  Focus and Pole

Object Location: Between F and P
Image Location: Behind the mirror
Nature of Image: Virtual
Magnification:  m > 1
