Multiple Reflection

 Multiple Reflection

When an object is kept between two plane mirrors, multiple reflections take place and a large number of images can be seen. The number of images formed depends upon the angle between the two mirrors. It also depends upon the position whether the object is kept on a perpendicular bisector or off perpendicular bisector.

Mathematically it can be obtained by,

n = 360θ

where n is an integer

The number of images formed (N) is given by:

Case 1: If n is even, then the Number of images formed is

N= n-1

Irrespective of the position where the object is kept.

Case 2: If n is odd, then the Number of images formed is

N= n-1 ( If the object is kept at angle bisector)

N= n ( If the object is kept off angle bisector)

Case 3If n =m is not an integer, then the Number of images formed is

N =m

Eg : If n= 3.5 , then N= 3
